Named WW2 US Navy Officers Bicorn Hat/Epaulettes set
Offered here is this original WW2 Named Bicon Hat & Epaulettes Set. Comes with metal trunk and key, plus 4 vintage photographs of the USS Augusta. This set at one time belonged to Ensign John Nelson Hughes who sailed aboard the USS Augusta. Hat & Epaulettes are in excellent condition, trunk has some obvious dents and scratches, does not affect the hat and epaulettes storage. The photographs give you a good idea what the Augusta looked like as well as the hat and epaulettes while being worn. Very nice set. The history of the USS Augusta is really quite incredible. You can read in full detail on Wikipedia, but I’ll summarize the highlights. The Augusta was launched in the 1930’s and first saw service in Asia. Sent to China in 1937 to observe the Japanese invasion. Most of the photos are embossed “Shanghai” because they were taken while the ship was in China. After it’s time in China and the Philippines the Augusta went to prewar Japan, and made its way back to the canal. FDR was really impressed with the vessel and made it the flagship. While on the Atlantic side the vessel hosted FDR and Winston Churchill, who both dined while onboard discussing future aid to the United Kingdom. While on the Atlantic WW2 broke out. Eventually the Augusta would be used to transport General George S. Patton, Omar Bradley, and other notables from history to North Africa. FDR’s love of the ship was very interesting. It’s amazing to think that Lieutenant Hughes could have brushed shoulders with any of these high profile historical figures.
