WWI Imperial German Saw Back Bayonet 1916
Offered here is a very fine example of a WWI Imperial German sawback bayonet. These bayonets were carried by German soldiers in the beginning of the First World War. Initially the idea was that the German infantryman could carry one less tool, or have one more tool available to him by adding a saw blade on the spine of his bayonet. However, this was later determined to be inhumane and was banned by allied nations. This type of bayonet was only produced in the beginning of the war, and quickly discontinued. Existing sawbacks were later converted for police use and had their spines ground down to conform to the new doctrine. Finding these bayonets in good condition is not easy. This example is on choice shape all around, and is nicely marked.
