WW1 Austrian M1916 Stahlhelm
Offered here is an exceptional example of an M1916 Austrian helmet. These helmets were issued to Austrian soldiers during the First World War, in an effort to modernize the headgear of the Austrian army. Typically collectors find these helmets in a painted brown camo, usually referred to as “Isonzo” camo due to the many battles fought against the Italians on the Isonzo river. This helmet differs in that this helmet bears a apple green paint, at some point in its life this helmet was repainted, which is evident from the flaking seen. There are traces of white paint on some areas of the helmet, I do not believe this was purposefully painted on, but rather the helmet bumped up against a painted wall. At least that is my best guess based on what I see when holding the helmet. What is very remarkable is that this liner contains its original chin strap and liner. You can tell that this liner has never been removed from the patina on the liner pins, they are beautifully rusted in place. This helmet is a very beautiful example of a hard to find piece, the condition of the helmets sets it over the top.
