WW1 US Painted Doughboy Helmet 80th Div
Offered here is a very fine example of a painted doughboy helmet from the First World War. This helmet was painted by a soldier who was apart of the 80th “Blue Ridge” division, hence the blue painted ridge on the side of the helmet. This particular helmet has several interesting features on it, the very front painted symbol I am unaware of the significance, could be a unit mark that only the members of his particular unit would have understood. Another interesting mark would be the “HQ 7” stamping on the chinstrap, I am also unaware as to the significance of this marking as well. The helmet does have the initials '“L.J.S.” written on the inside of the liner, which is something I like to see on these helmets. Sadly the chinstrap has snapped which is very common for these helmets, it is still attached to the helmet. Other than that the helmet is in very nice shape. Would be very hard to find an 80th Division painted helmet with more character than this one!
