WW1 US Painted & Named 1st Division Doughboy Helmet
Offered here is an incredible example of a painted doughboy helmet from the First World War. One of the things that I like to see on painted helmets is mistakes or human error, this helmet exhibits that when viewing the reverse where one can see Agdesteen tried to paint the 1st Division symbol, but either was unhappy with his work, or realized he painted it on the wrong side and painted over it and tried again. Not only is this a nicely conditioned doughboy helmet complete with liner and chinstrap, but it is also a painted example featuring the “Big Red One”. Not only that, but this helmet is also named to the soldier who wore this in battle. This helmet was owned by Corporal C. Agdesteen, who penciled his name onto the inside leather straps on the liner. I have not researched Agdesteen yet, so this could be a very nice research project for a collector. Overall this helmet cannot be upgraded, any 1st Division collector needs this in their collection!
