WWI British Princess Mary 1914 Christmas Box
Offered here is a very nice example of one of the many gift tins that British Princess Mary issued to British soldiers for Christmas in 1914. Princess Mary backed a public fund that distributed these tins filled with tobacco, chocolate, sometimes tea, a Christmas card, as well as a portrait of the king & queen. Princess Mary originally wanted to give each soldier a gift and paid for by her Royal stipend. However the cost for this was astronomical, so it was determined that it would only be accomplished if she could lend her name to a public fund. The contents of this tin are all gone, but the box remains and is in great shape!
